Hot-air balloons usher in Valentine's Day

http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/pam/2009/01/16/life/hot.air.balloons.usher.in.valentine.s.day..html

THE Department of Tourism (DOT) will roll out the red carpet for couples and sweethearts during the 14th Philippine International Hot-Air Balloon Festival on February 12 to 15, 2009 at the Philippine Air Force Ramp in Clark, Pampanga.

This will be the most colorful event that falls on the day of the hearts - Valentine's Day.

Tourism Regional Director Ronaldo Tiotuico said preparations are now underway to greet the day of hearts with a lot of surprises like offering fresh roses or candy bars and heart-shaped cakes for the first 100 couples or sweethearts that visit the DOT booth.

Games and valentine-related quiz bee will be held with prizes to be given away to participating couples. Special prizes will be given away to couples who wear or bring something that come close to celebrating Valentine's Day.

The ballooning event is hosted by Clark Development Corporation led by its president and CEO Benigno Ricafort, Philippine Air Force, Clark International Airport Corp. and a host of private sponsors like UPS, Cirrus, ABS-CBN, among others. Twenty-five balloons, including seven special-shaped ones, are expected to fly the friendly skies of Clark.

The event was first organized by the DOT in 1994 during the incumbency of then secretary Mina Gabor in hopes of uplifting the spirits of the Kapampangan at the height of the eruption of Mt. Pinatubo.

It was then handled by Tiotuico as the event organizer with the help of Sung Kee Paik, a Korean national, and John Emery of British Airways.

Since then, the ballooning never fails to attract more than a hundred thousand spectators from as far as Metro Manila and Baguio. It has since been officially recorded one of the scheduled ballooning event in the world even competing in public exposure and attention with that of Saga, Japan and Albuquerque, New Mexico. I went last year and was sorely disappointed. Not only were there no balloons flying due to strong winds but gone was the picnic atmosphere of a couple years prior making the whole event look like a trade exhibit with nothing in it.

Last year, I was somewhere in Africa so I was not able to attend the Hot-Air Balloon Festival. But I was there in Feb. 2007 and here were some of the photos I have taken.

yeah, now i cant seem to relax on the event, i miss the good old days when i was young and the festival was young, we would just sit there on the grass eat with the family, watch aircrafts pop baloons, see bigger baloons with basket fly, see celebs... hehe, the place wasn't so crowded, hai, atleast i got to experience that...

This year is the 13th International Hot Air Balloon Festival not the 14th !!!!!!!!!

11th = 2007

12th = 2008

13th = 2009

I guess the organizers have supertitious beliefs that's the reason they jump to 14th.

I reckoned the Americans don't believe in Supertitions because they have the
US 13th Air Force based in Clark from 1946 to 1991 the year Mt. Pinatubo erupted.

I guess their airplanes for military personnel passengers have a 13th row or a 13th seat.

rking, what's the payload of that huge RC plane of yours?  I bet it can easily carry a decent camera system.

thats a 50cc bird with a 87" / 2.25m wingspan. it weighs 14.5lbs without fuel and can easily carry a payload of up to 10-15lbs. i have a bigger plane powered by a 106cc twin cyliner gasoline engine. wingspan is 107" / 2.7m currently weighing 28.5lbs dry. that should easily carry a payload of up to 20lbs, maybe more.

there a lot of smaller planes out there that could carry similar payloads. this plane wasn't designed to carry much weight and was built as light as possible for unlimited aerobatic performance.

here's a video of one of its flights.
