hard to believe that a retired marine officer and active marine NCO would initiate the gunfight but end up dead

I beleive that it does'nt matter if you are Ironman or not, if it is your time to die ,it is your time. This isolated incident has no reflection at all to the other marines who remains true to their service.

Saw this group early morning 10 May (abt 0200H) on my way home with my family. It crossed my path with a Revo with strobes and light bars on and the two Willy's in military configurations with no lights on. Was planning to take pictures, good thing I didn't.

BTW, the traffic it created was enormous. The PNP closed the road fronting the Bacoor PNP Station.

Tension grips Cavite after shootout; police chief relieved

Tension continues to grip a town in Cavite province Tuesday, a day after two people were killed and two others injured in a shootout between authorities and supporters of a congressman in front of the police station.

Bacoor police chief Superintendent Ramil Montilla was relieved of his post, following Monday's shootout between police and military authorities and supporters of Cavite Rep. Joseph Emilio Abaya, Radio dzBB's Denver Trinidad reported.

Security remained on high alert at the station as police braced for a possible reprisal from Abaya's supporters.

One of those killed in Monday's incident was retired Col. Arnulfo Obilios, Abaya's chief of staff. Also killed was a Philippine Marines sergeant.

Abaya's supporters claimed they asked the Commission on Elections to place Bacoor under Comelec control due to the recent strafing of houses of some of Abaya’s supporters by unidentified men, according to the dzBB report.

Abaya's camp also alleged that the police "abducted" 11 of the congressman’s supporters that prompted Monday's "visit" to the police station.

Philippine National Police chief (PNP) Director General Jesus Verzosa said the incident was a case of political rivalry, based on initial investigation.

"This appeared to be a cause of political rivalry. It is high time we review if our culture pertaining to elections is proper," Verzosa said in an interview on dzBB radio.

Special investigation

PNP Deputy Director General Edgardo Acuña said a task force is now conducting a special investigation to shed light into Monday's shootout in Bacoor.

Acuña said investigator will also focus on claims of vote-buying, but did not elaborate. The incident likely stemmed from the rivalry between supporters of the politician and our policemen. There were also reports of vote-buying that turned into an ugly confrontation, he said in an interview on dwIZ radio. —VS, GMANews.TV

A SENIOR staff of ex-Cavite Representative Plaridel Abaya and one of his military bodyguards were killed in a shootout with policemen in Bacoor, Cavite yesterday afternoon.

They reportedly tried to rescue their supporters who were arrested for alleged vote-buying and shot and seriously wounded one officer.

Retired Col. Arnulfo Obillos, reportedly a member of Philippine Military Academy Class 1967 and a Marine soldier identified only as Espiritu exchanged fire with members of the Bacoor Municipal Police Station after they tried to storm the police station and disarmed one of the duty policemen of his M-16 rifle, said Cavite Provincial Police Office director, Senior Supt. Primitivo Tabujara Jr.

Tabujara said Abaya, who is seeking anew the 2nd congressional seat of Cavite against Lani Mercado, wife of administration Senator Ramon “Bong” Revilla Jr., is now under arrest along with two other supporters.

Investigation showed that Abaya, Obillos and a number of soldiers and civilians with guns went to the Bacoor police headquarters to seek the release of some of his supporters who were held for alleged vote-buying.

“The alleged vote-buyers were turned over by concerned citizens to the Bacoor police 10:30 a.m.,” he said.

Four hours later, the group of Abaya, on board two vehicles, arrived at the police headquarters and immediately grabbed the M-14 rifle of a policeman who was outside the station.

The group also attempted to take an M-60 machinegun outside the station
. Another policeman saw the incident and sought the help of his superiors who were inside their station.

One of the responding policemen identified as Police Officer 2 Manuel Gacosta was shot by the armed men in the head prompting the other lawmen to return fire killing Obillos on the spot.

Tabujara said the other Marine soldier died while undergoing treatment in a local hospital.   With a report from Alex T. Silva

So the guy who died is retired?  And if the press and police are correct (and basing it on what rules there are in prosecuting crimes and custodial investigation) why should Abaya demand the police to turn a vote-buying suspect over to them?

It reeks, and it's coming from the corpse. Why should there be a guy in uniform assisting the security aide of a candidate in demanding the police turn over a suspect to them?

I don't know but wouldn't this somewhat affect the ongoing investigation?

Noynoy, Mar hold press conference in Tarlac funeral parlor

TARLAC CITY, Tarlac - It was a most unusual place to hold a press conference.

President-apparent Sen. Benigno Simeon "Noynoy" Aquino III and running mate Sen. Manuel Roxas II held a press conference at a funeral parlor here, after condoling with a key ally here Friday.

Aquino and Roxas went to the Enriquez Funeral Homes where they condoled with the family of retired Col. Arnulfo Obillos, who was killed in a shooting incident in Cavite province last Monday.

Obillos was the chief of staff of Cavite Rep. Joseph Emilio Abaya, a member of Aquino and Roxas' Liberal Party.

During the press conference, Aquino and Roxas joined Rep. Abaya in calling for justice for Obillos, who Aquino described as a good man.

Before the press conference, security aides repeatedly inspected a chapel inside the funeral parlor that was to be used as the venue.

Some journalists covering the press conference were surprised about the venue, saying they were not used to the "ambience" of the place.

A long table was placed at the front of the chapel where Aquino, Roxas and Abaya answered questions from reporters.

On the other hand, mourners condoling in other chapels entered the chapel where the press conference was being held, after they learned Aquino was there.

Many asked to shake Aquino's hand or pose for a photo. - LBG, RJAB Jr., GMANews.TV

I don't know.

The future Commander-in-Chief of the Republic of the Philippines, holding a press conference at the funeral of a supporter accused of vote buying to make a political statement?

Ex-Cavite Rep. Abaya faces assault raps

MANILA, Philippines - Former Cavite congressman Plaridel Abaya is set to face charges of frustrated murder, illegal possession of firearms and direct assault after a shooting incident with policemen in Talaba village in Bacoor, Cavite Monday.

Initial reports said Abaya and his men trooped to the Bacoor police station to complain about the alleged abduction of 9 of his supporters. The discussion, however, became heated, culminating in a gunfight between Abaya's men and police officers.

Senior Superintendent Primitivo Tabojara, Cavite police director, said Abaya shot PO2 Manuel Gacosta. Police, on the other hand, shot and killed Abaya’s chief of staff, retired colonel Arnulfo Obillo, and 2 security guards -- Mike Pilapil and a certain Sergeant Paraiso of the Philippine Marines.

Ex-Cavite solon, others involved in Bacoor squabble freed
May 13, 2010, 5:34pm

A former Cavite congressman and five others charged for the bloody Bacoor clash were released but police would not easily give up to put them back behind bars.

Senior Superintendent Primitivo Tabujara, director of the Cavite Police, said they are set to file a motion for reconsideration to reverse the ruling of government prosecutors to release former congressman Plaridel Abaya and five others for further investigation.

Tabujara said they will make use of the 15-day period that would be given by prosecutors to gather enough evidence to pin down Abaya. Also included in the charge sheet were lawyer Reynaldo Robles, Lauro Geronimo, Jr., Niel Flores Obillos who was wounded in the incident, and Navy Petty Officers 2 Eduardo Fernandez and Rolito Antazo.

Police said Abaya and his military escorts tried to free his supporters from the Bacoor Police Station where they were detained after allegedly caught engaged in vote-buying activities on Monday.

The military escorts of Abaya reportedly disarmed a policeman and shot another, triggering a clash that left two people dead and two others wounded.

But Abaya, who lost to actress Lani Mercado in a congressional race in Cavite, denied the allegation, saying the allegation that they were there to assault the police station is ridiculous since he is already incapable to do so due to his old age. He claimed that he went to the Bacoor Police station to file harassment case after they received reports that their supporters are being harassed.

On Thursday, the group of Abaya went to Camp Crame to seek for an independent investigation in order to shed light on the incident. (Aaron Recuenco)
