Subaru hands over UH-X helicopter prototype to Japanese MoD
« on: April 04, 2019, 06:46:50 PM »

12 March 2019

The Subaru Corporation handed over a prototype of its new UH-X multirole medium helicopter to the Japan Ministry of Defense (MoD) at the company's Utsunomiya plant in Tochigi Prefecture on 28 February.

The move comes after the prototype, which is based on the Subaru Bell 412EPX commercial helicopter, completed its maiden flight on 25 December 2018 and passed a series of subsequent flight tests.

The company said it will prepare for the start of mass production of the new multirole platform.

The MoD plans to replace the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force's (JGSDF's) fleet of 127 UH-1Js with about 150 UH-Xs over the next two decades, 34 of which will be acquired under the country's 2019-23 Mid-Term Defence Program (MTDP), which was approved on 18 December 2018.

Unlike the UH-1J, the new helicopter has two engines and a four-blade main rotor.

The JGSDF has secured JPY11 billion (USD98.7 million) to acquire six UH-X helicopters for fiscal year 2019. Defence officials have told Jane's that the first UH-Xs are expected to be deployed by the JGSDF by March 2022.

Bell is working to further upgrade its Model 412 helicopter to EPX standard, which Japan will use as the base for its UH-X utility helicopter program, which calls for the replacement of about 150 older UH-1J Hueys. (Bell image)
Avoiding development risk was one reason that Japan chose the long-established Bell 412EPI in 2015 as the basis for an army utility helicopter. Three years later, the defense ministry is getting what it expected: Development of the 412 upgrade, the UH-X, is on schedule.

Prime contractor Subaru has been working on integrating the UH-X’s limited amount of military equipment, while Bell has been developing an improved 412 that will serve as the basis of the UH-X. The ministry has further protected itself against risk by allowing only slight changes in specification since program launch.

Japan’s defense ministry hopes to get funding to Subaru to begin production of UH-Xs in the fiscal year beginning April 2019. The first delivery is due in fiscal 2021. It will occur late in that year, says the ministry—more specifically, in 2022, according to Bell. The ministry proposes to buy 150 UH-Xs over 20 years to replace the army’s Bell UH-1Js. A civil version will also be available.

Subaru is doing most of the integration work, the ministry says. Bell, meanwhile, has built a prototype of the upgraded version of the civil 412EPI. The new version, at first called the 412EPI Enhanced, is now the 412EPX. The FAA certified it in July.

putting it here in line with Japan's fleet of UH-1J models to be retired after deliveries of Bell 412's. A potential EDA on a interim CUH while brand new CUH are coming in in trickle.

When I first read of Subaru bagging the license to build UH412s on my newsfeed, I thought they would make a viable alternative source of newly-made Hueys when we had a row with Ottawa's Trudeau Government over their use in COIN ops. Given how long it would take for it to start making deliveries for the JGSDF, it would be when we have a new administration voted into office.

In the meantime, some have been hinting of offers of UH60s co-produced in Poland as an alternative but is it viable considering we've been flying Hueys since when Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo was still in school.
