F35 disappears east of Japan
« on: April 09, 2019, 12:39:54 PM »
Perhaps the JASDF test pilot defected to Russia...or China? Russia's Vladivostock is only 442 nautical miles from Misawa Airbase where the JASDF F35 flew from.

A Japanese F-35 stealth fighter jet with one pilot on board disappeared from radar while on a training mission over the Pacific on Tuesday night, the defense ministry said.
The fighter jet went missing at around 7:30 p.m. (1030 GMT) as it was flying some 135 km (84 miles) east of Misawa in northeastern Japan, a ministry spokeswoman said.
It was not immediately clear if it had crashed, the spokesperson said, adding: “We are still trying to search for the aircraft.”
“The cause is unknown,” Defense Minister Takeshi Iwaya said, adding that the remaining 12 F-35As deployed to Misawa were grounded, Kyodo News reported.

Crashed Japanese F-35 wreckage found in Pacific, pilot still missing

TOKYO (Reuters) - Search and rescue teams found wreckage from a crashed Japanese F-35 stealth fighter in the Pacific Ocean close to northern Japan, and are scouring the waters for the missing pilot, authorities said on Wednesday.

The aircraft, less than a year old, was the first F-35 assembled in Japan and was aloft for only 28 minutes on Tuesday before contact was lost, a defense official said. The plane had logged a total of 280 hours in the air, he added.

It was only the second F-35 to crash since the aircraft’s first flight in 2006 and could reignite concern about the F-35 having only one engine.

High-altitude US recon plane joins search for F-35 and missing Japanese pilot
By SETH ROBSON AND HANA KUSUMOTO | STARS AND STRIPES Published: April 12, 2019
YOKOTA AIR BASE, Japan — The Japan Air Self-Defense Force on Friday identified the pilot missing since his stealth fighter plunged Tuesday into the Pacific Ocean as Maj. Akinori Hosomi.

Also Friday, U.S. Forces Japan said an Air Force U-2 Dragon Lady tactical reconnaissance plane has joined the search for Hosomi and the F-35A Lightning II fighter he was flying when it disappeared just before 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The Lightning II went down approximately 85 miles east of Misawa Air Base, its home field in northeastern Japan, just before 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. A search team found parts of the downed aircraft’s left and right rudders in the water about two hours later, the JASDF said Wednesday.

It’s the first loss of an F-35A, a fifth-generation fighter, anywhere in the world. A Marine Corps F-35B, capable of short takeoffs and landings, crashed in September near the Marine air station in Beaufort, S.C.
